Play The Harp

I thought I was so perfect, ’till I seen my mistake;

‘Cause then I got to thinkin’; I ’s much better than the rest.

Sometimes I do right, sometimes I do wrong;

I can sing a Gospel tune, or a low down cheatin’ song.

I got one foot through the pearly gates; Got one foot down below,

I gotta learn to play the harp, I already shovel coal.

My momma shes a good girl, although she made mistakes,

She’s a real deep believer and she’s tried to keep the faith.

She set me on her knee, when I was barely five;

Read me all the stories, said the good book, it don’t lie.

Now son, you listen close now, come set your sights on high.

And we might meet again in the sweet bye and bye.

Break

Now I have talked to Jesus, and He taught me right from wrong.

He Said, “Believe in Me and forgive your fellow man;

Stay clear of the devil boy; Do the best you can.

I already bought your ticket son, to the promised land.

But you got one foot through the pearly gates,

You got one foot down the hole.

You gotta learn to play the harp, you already shovel coal.”

Well I’ve thrown dice with the devil friends, I thought I had the knack.

To gamble with my soul; my fingers crossed behind my back.

I rode a streak of winnings, boy I thought I had it made.

Till one day Satan came along, said “There’s a debt here to be paid.”

I’ve got one foot through the pearly gates; Got one foot down below,

I gotta learn to play the harp, I already shovel coal.

I thought rode the lead horse, still I fell from grace;

Now I realize I was the last one in the race.

Still, sometimes I do right, sometimes I do wrong;

I can sing a gospel moan , or a low down cheatin’ song.

I got one foot through the pearly gates; One foot down below,

I gotta learn to play the harp, I already shovel coal.
